AI Systems, Bias & Age

What could an age-inclusive future of AI in health look like?
As part of the WZB project Any Age AI, the workshop series AI Systems, Bias & Age brought together AI practitioners and people aged 60+ to collaboratively develop desirable future perspectives.

  • 3 workshops
The project included three creative futuring workshops with different thematic focuses and participant groups.
  • 11 months
The project ran over 11 months, from July 2024 to June 2025.
  • 2,000+ design materials
Key insights were translated into fold-out posters, postcards, and sticker sets.
  • 1 conference
Project outcomes were later presented as a mini-workshop at the Falling Walls Science Summit.
The relationship between AI and age discrimination remains an emerging field of research. As part of the Any Age AI project, the workshop series AI Systems, Bias & Age brought together AI practitioners and people aged 60+ to explore this intersection. Across three interactive workshops, participants critically reflected on age-related bias in healthcare systems and collaboratively developed desirable future perspectives for more inclusive AI.
Project phases
1
Project planning
Coordination and organisation across all stakeholders, including researchers, WZB staff, facilities management, and workshop participants.
2
Participant recruitment
Research, outreach, communication, and briefing calls with different participant groups, including people aged 60+, AI practitioners, and stakeholders.
3
Workshops
Design, facilitation, and documentation of three half-day workshops with different thematic focuses and participant constellations.
4
Synthesis & design
Synthesis of six key findings and design of multilingual materials, including illustrations, fold-out posters, postcards, and sticker sets.
The workshops
  • Workshop 1 with people aged 60+
Together with participants aged 60+, experiences, hopes, and concerns regarding AI in health were explored. Participants critically reflected on future scenarios and developed creative visions and prototypes for possible applications.
  • Workshop 2 with AI practitioners
Assumptions and stereotypes around age and AI were surfaced and critically examined. Participants developed alternative futures, discussed probable and desirable developments, and questioned underlying assumptions.
  • Workshop 3 with all participant groups
Older adults and AI practitioners exchanged perspectives on AI in health and developed shared ideas for age-inclusive design. Scenario work served as a basis for discussion, reflection, and collaborative future-making.
